The Energetic Materials Center partners with experts in industry, academia, and government to bring diverse perspectives, capabilities, creativity, and expertise to solve increasingly complex challenges related to energetic materials. Together, we pioneer new technologies, experimental techniques, and production processes capable of addressing a broad range of national security mission needs.
Academic Alliances
We engage in joint research projects with colleagues at academic institutions that have relevant research programs and mission-relevant experimental capabilities. In addition to expanding the scope of our research through these initiatives, these types of collaborative efforts also enable LLNL to reach out to future energetic materials experts, providing them with opportunities to serve as interns at LLNL or be part of multi-institutional national security research projects. LLNL also hosts faculty mini-sabbatical opportunities, where faculty from U.S. colleges and universities can visit our Laboratory for up to three months to exchange knowledge and build partnerships.
Government Partners
Our research teams develop solutions for U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. For example, they deliver training for agency personnel who may encounter explosive devices, along with guidance regarding how to safely handle these situations. Our teams also develop innovative diagnostics that public safety personnel can use to rapidly detect explosives. In addition, our research supports stockpile modernization efforts for the National Nuclear Security Administration, as well as production agencies across the national security enterprise.
Private Sector Collaborators
Industry partners leverage LLNL’s unique expertise and resources through sponsored research and development projects that solve technical challenges unable to be addressed in the private sector and accelerate technological advancements that enhance U.S. economic competitiveness.
Scientific Community
Experts from LLNL’s Energetics Materials Center also share their knowledge with the broader scientific community through articles in leading scientific journals, conference presentations, and advising provided to experts across the national security enterprise.
